UX & Maintainability Review

Our flagship engagement: a paired reading of operator experience and the code paths that make those screens expensive to evolve.

Advisory review · 2–3 weeks · Remote with Chiang Mai on-site option · Fixed project fee

Who this is for

Product owners and engineering leads responsible for a shipped desktop application — Windows, macOS, Linux, or a cross-platform client — who need an external assessment before a redesign, a major version, or a staffing decision.

Typical clients include teams behind trading desks, creative workstations, laboratory instruments, and internal operations consoles where operators spend hours inside a single windowed environment.

Result you receive

A written report and a live findings workshop covering:

  • Ranked UX friction points on the primary task flows you nominate
  • Maintainability observations tied to those same screens (coupling, naming debt, missing tests, brittle UI state)
  • A sequenced recommendation list with effort bands (small / medium / large)
  • Exclusions called out clearly so the backlog stays honest

We do not rewrite your application as part of this engagement. Implementation remains with your team unless you later book follow-on advisory hours.

What is included

  • Kickoff call to confirm personas, OS targets, and success criteria
  • Access review of builds, screen recordings, or a staging environment you control
  • Two structured walkthrough sessions (up to 90 minutes each)
  • Codebase sampling in the modules that power the reviewed flows
  • Draft report for factual correction, then final PDF and workshop

What is excluded

  • Full accessibility audits against WCAG (we flag issues we notice; we do not certify compliance)
  • Penetration testing or security assessments
  • Ongoing retainer coding or ticket triage
  • Redesign mockups beyond lightweight sketches that clarify a recommendation

Provider & approach

Desktop Amberbase consultants combine interface critique with reading production code. Sessions are conversational; we ask operators and engineers to narrate real tasks rather than following a scripted demo.

Process & timeline

StageTiming
Kickoff & accessDays 1–3
Walkthroughs & code samplingDays 4–10
Draft reportDays 11–14
Findings workshop & final deliveryDays 15–18

Exact calendar depends on how quickly access and stakeholder time are available.

Location & delivery

Default delivery is remote video with shared screen recordings. On-site observation at your Chiang Mai office or ours (Office 10, 53 Demo Street) can be arranged when operators cannot be recorded off-site.

Preparation

Please prepare:

  1. A short list of the three to five tasks that matter most to operators
  2. Installers or a remote session to a representative build
  3. A guide who can answer architecture questions for the UI layer
  4. Known constraints (localization, offline mode, certification requirements)

Pricing basis

Quoted as a fixed project fee after we see scope. Factors include number of OS targets, depth of code access, and whether observation must happen on-site. See Rates for starting ranges.
